Delta-8 THC gummies vs. Delta-9 THC gummies

While Delta-8 THC and Delta-9 THC have similar effects and benefits, they have some notable differences.

Delta-8 THC and Delta-9 THC are two of the most sought-after cannabinoids. These psychoactive compounds have a lot in common with one another, but there are some pretty big differences between the two.

Specifically, when it comes to how they affect users, where you can buy them, and even their legality. So, if you’re a hemp enthusiast looking for a psychoactive experience, which one should you choose?

What is Delta-9 THC?

The better known of the two, Delta-9 THC, is the most abundant cannabinoid in marijuana and is the compound primarily responsible for its psychoactive effects.

You can find Delta-9 in hemp as well, but only in trace amounts. In fact, the main difference between hemp and marijuana is that, by definition, hemp contains less than 0.3% Delta-9 THC.

The intoxicating effects of Delta-9 THC are what make it so appealing. Unless you lived in a state where marijuana was legal, it used to be impossible to legally acquire Delta-9 THC products. However, due to advancements in cannabis technology and recent pro-hemp legislation, the cannabinoid is now widely available.

What is Delta-8 THC?

A hemp-derived cannabinoid with psychoactive effects and impressive wellness benefits, Delta-8 THC has recently also become very popular.

When Delta-9 ages in the raw hemp plant, it partially converts into Delta-8, taking on new chemical properties along the way. Delta-8 is found in about 0.1% of the plant’s entire chemical composition, making it a trace cannabinoid which must be isolated and concentrated in order to be turned into effective Delta-8 products.

Is Delta-9 THC legal?

According to the 2018 Farm Bill, a product incorporating hemp-derived Delta-9 THC is legal as long as it contains no more than 0.3% Delta-9 THC by weight.

While that may sound like a minor amount, in a heavy Delta-9 THC product, it can result in a sizable dose of THC. For example, if a Delta-9 THC gummy weighs 4 grams it can legally contain up to 12 mg of Delta-9 THC.

Due to this THC weight limitation, items like Delta-9 THC flower or vapes will not be federally legal until marijuana is federally legalized. Until then, the only federally legal consumable Delta-9 products will be THC edibles.

Legal Delta-9 gummies contain hemp-derived cannabinoids and less than 0.3% Delta-9 THC.

Is Delta-8 THC legal?

The Farm Bill does not single out any cannabinoids other than Delta-9 THC. Therefore, as long as Delta-8 THC is derived from hemp and not marijuana, it’s federally legal.

Because of this, there is no legal limit on how much Delta-8 THC a product can contain.

What is the difference between Delta-8 THC and Delta-9 THC?

Delta-8 THC is about two-thirds as intoxicating as Delta-9 THC, which means that you may prefer Delta-8 gummies if you find Delta-9 to be too intense.

Intensity aside, the effects of Delta-8 THC are almost the same as those of Delta-9 THC. However, some users report that the high induced by Delta-8 THC is shorter and mellower.
